Martyrs' Day in India

Martyrs' Day is an annual day observed by nations to salute the martyrdom of soldiers who lost their lives defending the sovereignty of the nation. People observe a two-minute silence in the memory of Indian freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives. Many schools organise functions on this day and students perform patriotic songs and plays.

On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot and assassinated by Nathuram Godse during his evening prayers at the Birla House. As a result, the country remembers Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary as Martyrs' Day on January 30th.

Every year March 23 is observed as Martyrs' Day when Indians commemorate the sacrifices given by freedom fighters and other people to gain independence from British rule.
