Botswana is Africa's oldest continuous democracy. Since gaining independence from Britain on September 30, 1966, Botswana has maintained an uninterrupted tradition of democratic elections, making it Africa's oldest democracy.

A Women and Law in Southern Africa (WLSA Botswana) study of maintenance laws and practices (1992) points to the difficulties faced by women to obtain financial support for their children from their biological fathers.
