26 January - Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day
Bubble Wrap has a whole day dedicated to it. Bubble Wrap was originally invented as wallpaper. Fifty years ago, Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes created three-dimensional wallpaper from sealed air pockets between shower curtains. Intending to create a new form of household décor, they sealed 2 shower curtains together, trapping pockets of air inside.
Despite the novelty, it never truly took off. While it takes 500 degrees of heat for generic bubble wrap to become flammable and 200 degrees to melt, the product can catch on fire easily and quickly due to the mix of plastic spheres and oxygen.
America celebrates National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day every year on the last Monday of January. How did this holiday come to be?! A radio station in Bloomington, Indiana received a shipment of microphones that they were unwrapping on-air one morning. The audience listened as the sound of Bubble Wrap was popping and loved it. The rest is history! Bubble Wrap is actually proven to reduce stress.
