US President Theodore Roosevelt, while hunting in Mississippi in 1902, refused to shoot a small bear. The Washington Post picked up this story and made a cartoon about this event. Toy store owners, Morris and Rose Mihtom, wrote to President Roosevelt asking for permission to call their soft toys "Teddy Bears." Since then, Teddy Bears have become wildly popular.
