Being a single parent and raising children single-handedly is quite a challenging responsibility. In the United States, since the 1960s, there has been an increase in the number of children living with a single parent. The jump was caused by an increase in births to unmarried women and by the increasing prevalence of divorces among couples. In 2010, 40.7% of births in the US were to unmarried women.
The General Social Survey: Our results indicate that single mothers are not a happy group. They report being significantly less happy, on average, than do all respondents, all female respondents, single women without children, and married mothers. This "happiness gap" is present at both ends of the happiness distribution.
Strong single parents consistently sacrifice their own needs and want to put their children first. But there's more to being a successful solo parent than taking a back seat to higher priorities.
