Arequipa City Festival in Peru

The people of Arequipa do take seriously the celebration of the anniversary of its foundation, and for a whole month the traditions take control of the city.

August 15 is the main day, but many days before that, the air of a party can be breathed in every corner and place. It is de rigueur that at 12 o'clock at night, the anthem of Arequipa sounds and that the entertainment officially begins. Highlights include "The entrance of the Ccapo" (sacred tree that formerly kept the square warm), the Serenade and the Corso de la Amistad, in which dozens of dancers dance for hours to the rhythm of the Arequipa carnival.
