The human body has more microbes than there are human cells. In fact, microbes are ten times more than the number of human cells in a living human being. The microbiome may weigh as much as five pounds. The bacteria in the microbiome help digest our food, regulate our immune system, protect against other bacteria that cause disease, and produce vitamins including B vitamins B12, thiamine and riboflavin, and Vitamin K, which is needed for blood coagulation. The human mouth has approximately 500 bacteria species.
Each person has an entirely unique network of microbiota that is originally determined by one's DNA. A person is first exposed to microorganisms as an infant, during delivery in the birth canal and through the mother's breast milk.
