World Otter Day is always held on the last Wednesday in May.
Otters are decreasing in numbers all around the world. All thirteen species of them are on the Red List of Endangered species. This day was created by the International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF) to raise awareness of the importance of otters to the environment, the necessity of their protection and their natural habitat preservation.
The observance started in 2009 as Otterly Mad Week, became International Otter Awareness Day in 2014 and in 2016 it evolved into the World Otter Day. Now it is celebrated in over twenty countries around the world.
