The fact is that millions of potential shelter pets die each year. When an animal enters a shelter, it is usually fed, treated, vaccinated, spayed, and cleaned up. As such, it awaits its future potential owner for some time. But shelters cannot hold an animal indefinitely, otherwise they will simply overflow, go bankrupt, and disappear.

When shelter workers become convinced that the animal remains unclaimed, they put it to sleep.
