On May 31 of each year the "Day of the Political Constitution of the Republic" (Día de la Constitución Política de la República) is celebrated, according to decree 2-86 of the National Constituent Assembly, in commemoration of the historical moment in which this transcendental instrument was born, which embodies the recognition of the fundamental rights of all Guatemalans, as well as the essential principles of the organization of public power.
The Magna Carta, promulgated on May 31, 1985, came into force in 1986, and constitutes the social pact that governs the rights and obligations of Guatemalans. It consists of 281 articles and 22 transitory provisions, and is divided into three parts: dogmatic, organic and pragmatic or practical.
