We tripantu or wüñoy Tripantu is the Mapuche New Year celebration that takes place on the southern winter solstice (the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere) between June 21 and 24. We tripantu is a day of celebration for the Mapuche and corresponds to the beginning of the increasingly longer days until the summer solstice and the eventual rebirth of nature after the entering winter. The Mapuche New Year is equivalent to the celebration of the New Year on December 31 in countries that use the Gregorian calendar, close to the northern winter solstice (the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere).
