On July 11, 1893, the liberal insurgency captured President Salvador Machado and his minister Fernando Sánchez in León, a memorable date for the liberals and an event that marks the beginning of Zelaya's Liberal Revolution.
On July 16, notable conservative members together with the remaining ministers of Machado's government, named General Joaquín Zavala (conservative, from Granada) in charge of the Executive Power who was sworn in that same day by the Minister of the Interior, Don Miguel Vijil, and proceeded to organize the military defense of Managua.
Zelaya's liberal forces attacked the government defenses in Mateare, but were defeated; however, those government troops moved from Mateare to Cuesta del Plomo, where they installed their defense, but on July 21 they were defeated by the liberals and Zelaya took Managua. On July 25 the triumphant liberal troops marched from the Cuesta del Plomo to the center of Managua and for that reason that street was baptized with the name of "Calle del Triunfo" (Triumph Street).
