Querétaro, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Querétaro, is one of the thirty-one states that, together with Mexico City, make up Mexico. Its capital and most populated city is Santiago de Querétaro. It is located in the north-central region of the country and is bordered to the north by the states of Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí, to the south by the state of Hidalgo and the state of Mexico, and to the west by the state of Michoacán.
Tradition mentions that on July 25, 1531 Queretaro was founded with the arrival of the Spaniards under the command of Hernan Perez Bocanegra y Cordoba, in an alliance with the Otomi Indian Conin who was the cacique of Jilotepec. At the entrance of the city is the monument to this Otomi cacique in black quarry stone welcoming visitors. The location was chosen taking into account the place where on July 23, 1531 Conin organized his army to meet with captains Lobo and Coyote of the Chichimeca forces that opposed the advance of colonization.
