Our Lady of Snows is an ancient Marian devotion that is widespread in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Latin America. The Patronal Festivities of Vitoria, celebrated from August 4 to 9 in honor of its patron saint, the Virgin of the Snows, are famous.
In the Council of Ephesus (431) the Mother of Jesus was proclaimed Mother of God. Pope Sixtus III erected in Rome, on Mount Esquiline, a Basilica dedicated to the Holy Mother of God. It was also known by the name of Saint Mary of the Snows because that place was miraculously marked with a heavy snowfall in midsummer. Today it is the oldest church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and one of the most visited temples in all of Christendom.
