As a result of Supreme Decree Nº 28315 of August 26, 2005, issued by the National Protected Areas Service (Sernap), September 4 has been declared National Protected Areas Day in Bolivia. This date coincides with the institutionalization of Sernap in 1998, a decentralized organ of the then Ministry of Sustainable Development, in charge of coordinating the functioning of the National System of Protected Areas and guaranteeing their integral management.
Santa Cruz has more than 100,000 km2 of national, departmental, municipal and private protected areas and, with more than 30% of its territory in some category of protection, it is the absolute leader at the national level.
