The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, abbreviated UNESCO, is a specialized agency of the United Nations.
It was founded on November 16, 1945 with the aim of contributing to peace and security in the world through education, science, culture and communication. The constitution signed on that day came into force on November 4, 1946, ratified by twenty countries. In 1958, its headquarters, in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, was inaugurated.
In 2017 it had 195 member states and 10 associate members.
