International Banana Day

International Banana Day is a curious holiday celebrated every year on the third Wednesday in April. This day recognizes the banana not only as a popular fruit, but also as an important part of the global economy and culture.

The banana has a fascinating history: it originated in South East Asia and spread from there to Africa and later to America. Today, it is a staple food in many tropical regions and one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world. Interestingly, bananas do not grow on trees, but on shrubs that die after fruiting.

The day also provides an opportunity to reflect on issues such as sustainable cultivation, fair trade practices and the social impact of banana cultivation. In Germany, for example, around a third of imported bananas come from fair trade.
