Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed Decree No. 235/2026 of March 12, 2026, establishing Romanian Language Day in Ukraine. The holiday will be celebrated annually on August 31, together with Romania and Moldova, to strengthen good neighborly relations, support intercultural dialogue, and preserve the cultural identity of Ukrainian Romanians.
Date of celebration: August 31 (effective from the date of publication).
Purpose: To develop mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation in Ukrainian-Romanian relations, as well as to support the linguistic and cultural identity of the Romanian community in Ukraine.
Context: This decision was made as part of the development of humanitarian cooperation, similar to how Romania celebrates Ukrainian Language Day (November 9).
There are over 150,000 ethnic Romanians living in Ukraine, mainly in the Chernivtsi and Odesa regions, for whom this decision is an important step in preserving their linguistic heritage.
