Khongjom Day is celebrated every year on the 23rd of April remembering those gallant Manipuri warriors who made supreme sacrifice fighting against the British to protect the freedom of Manipur in the battle of Khongjom during the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War.
On 24th March, 1891 an attack was launched on 'Yubraj' Bir Tikendrajit's residence early in the morning by the British Gorkha Battalion with a strength of 400 soldiers under the command of Colonel McDowal Skene of the British Army.
The Battle of Khongjom was the greatest battle of the Anglo-Manipur War. Great freedom fighters-Major Paona Brajabasi, Chinglen Sana, Khumbong Major, Loitongba Jamadar, Keisa Jamadar, Heirang Khongja and many more rank and files of Manipuri warriors sacrificed their lives at this battlefield.
