The battle of Las Piedras was the first important triumph of José Gervasio Artigas in command of the patriot army of the Junta Grande de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata in the territory of the Banda Oriental. In it he defeated the royalist forces of the governor of Montevideo and new viceroy of the Río de la Plata, Francisco Javier de Elío, at mid-afternoon of May 18, 1811.
