7 September - Mozambique Victory Day
As well as its great crafts Mozambique is famous for its traditional music, especially its marimba bands. Modern Mozambican music has been likened to Reggae and Calypso.
In 1891 the British-Portuguese treaty was signed which set the boundaries of Portuguese East Africa (the former name for Mozambique). The country was named Moçambique by the Portuguese after the Island of Mozambique, derived from Mussa Bin Bique or Musa Al Big or Mossa Al Bique or Mussa Ben Mbiki or Mussa Ibn Malik, an Arab trader who first visited the island and later lived there.
On 7 September, Mozambique commemorates Victory Day - it has been declared a national holiday as the country remembers the signing of an agreement to end the Mozambican War of Independence. The agreement was signed between Portugal and Mozambique in 1974, with independence granted to Mozambique in 1975. In Portuguese, the official language of Mozambique, the holiday is known as Dia da Vitória.
