In 1871, Dominica became attached to the Leeward Islands, followed by its independence from Britain on November 3, 1978 and became an independent republic within the Commonwealth.
During Independence, dominicans celebrate them unique heritage and Creole culture with colourful events such as Heritage Day, Creole Day, the Miss Wob Dwiyet Pageant, the Ti Matador Competition, Market Day with a difference and more.
The Independence Celebration is about music, dancing, clothes and food. Every year, the country commemorates it's Independence with a season of cultural activities which can last as long as four weeks.
