Yurei no Hi in Japan

Yūrei are Japanese folklore ghosts known for haunting a specific location at a specific time (generally corresponding to their time of death). They are famous for having an appearance which strikes fear into their foes, often resulting in self-mutilation or suicide. Traditionally, these ghosts are characterized by their plain white robes, disheveled hair, pale and forlorn faces, lifelessly dangling hands, and lack of feet.

On 29 July, 1825, Tsuruya Nanboku IV wrote a kabuki play titled Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan which has gone on to become one of the most famous ghost stories in Japan. That, combined with the Japanese custom of indulging in the paranormal during the long, hot summer months, has led to this day being dubbed Yurei no Hi, or Ghost Day.
