12 February - Condom Week
Originally condoms weren't made of rubber. The first condoms were made of sheep intestines. The first rubber condom was produced in 1855. Charles Goodyear, the inventor, utilized vulcanization, the process of transforming rubber into malleable structures, to produce latex condoms. Most condoms now are made with latex or polyurethane which are better at protecting against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). The research is clear about the efficacy of condoms. Condoms are highly effective against the most dangerous of sexually transmitted infectionsHIV, the virus that causes AIDS. They are also effective against unintended pregnancy as well as against gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis.
Not everyone was able to buy condoms when they became popular in the 18th century. Those with latex allergies may not be able to use regular condoms. An alternative would be to use polyurethane condoms, or condoms made out of lambskin. These are more expensive than the regular condoms.
