On May 27, 2022 the United Nations General Assembly in resolution 76/265 decides to proclaim March 1 as World Seagrass Day, to be celebrated every year.
World Seagrass Day is an annual environmental celebration commemorated for the first time on 1 March 2023. It seeks to raise awareness of the importance of seagrass ecosystems, which are "flowering seagrass plants found in shallow waters that are essential to the lives of thousands of species of fish, seahorses and turtles, among others."
As a reminder, World Algae Day has been celebrated since 2017 on October 12. The idea was put forward by Jörg Ullmann in cooperation with World Algae News.
