1 March - Ohio Statehood Day
Ohio originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo', which means “great river.” Ohio has over 40,000 miles of waterways. Ohio is known as the birthplace of many things, like the NFL, the cash register, Wendy's, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Everybody knows Ohio is "The Buckeye State," but you may not know that a buckeye is a nut-like seed from the official state tree. Buckeyes are the quintessential Ohio candy, and you can find them throughout the state at restaurants, gas stations, cafes, and potlucks.
While Ohio's boundaries and constitution were approved by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, it wasn't officially granted statehood until 1953 when Dwight D. Eisenhower signed and backdated Ohio's admittance to the union.
