In the early 1800s, the Spanish gave Nevada its name. It originated from the Spanish "Sierra Nevada," meaning "snow-covered mountain range." Nevada is the seventh-largest state in size in the U.S. America's largest silver deposit, the Comstock Lode, was found in Nevada in 1859. Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other state in the U.S.

Nevada is the gambling and entertainment capital of the United States. Las Vegas has more hotel rooms than any other city on Earth. The bill to legalize gambling in Nevada was first passed in March of 1931. The first round courthouse built in the U.S. was the Pershing County Courthouse, which is located in Lovelock, Nevada.

Nevada produced the first blue jeans. Jacob Davis, Reno-based Latvian tailor, teamed up with Levi Strauss and together they invented the first pair of blue jeans. The Hoover Dam is one of Nevada's most famous tourist attractions.
