The date commemorating the professionals in mechanical engineering - Dia do Engenheiro Mecânico - June 5th - refers to the birth of industrialist Delmiro Gouveia (Ceará, 1863 - Alagoas, 1917), one of the pioneers of the country's industrialization and of the use of its hydroelectric potential, having built the first sewing thread factory and the second Brazilian hydroelectric power plant, Paulo Afonso, between Alagoas and Bahia.
To become a mechanical engineer one must complete a college degree in Mechanical Engineering at a college duly regulated by the Ministry of Education (MEC). The bachelor's degree in the area lasts five years and prepares the professional for day-to-day work.
The first Mechanical Engineering course in Brazil and South America was founded in 1913 in Minas Gerais, at the Instituto Eletrotécnico e Mecânico de Itajubá - IEMI, an institution that aimed to train mechanical and electrical engineers.
The mechanical engineer is responsible for developing machines and equipment for several types of industry: automotive, aeronautics, household appliances, information technology, and the like. It is a very dynamic profession, which requires a keen eye for detail, the ability to supervise production processes and, above all, to know how to work in a team.
