Tuberous Sclerosis Complex is a low prevalence disease, of genetic origin, caused by benign tumors that can grow in different parts of the body and alter the function of the affected organs, which most frequently are eyes, heart, brain, lungs, kidneys and skin. That is why the International Tuberous Sclerosis Day is celebrated on May 15, to disseminate information about the importance of this rare genetic disorder that affects thousands of people around the world.
The celebration is promoted by the Tuberous Sclerosis Complex International and has been joined by the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance along with organizations from all over the world to increase exposure.
Tuberous Sclerosis Complex affects an estimated 1 in 6,000 live births: 1 million people worldwide have Tuberous Sclerosis.
The disease can manifest itself differently from one person to another, even within the same family, in some cases seriously compromising the health of patients, and the symptoms of the disease may appear and/or change over time. In some cases the problems can be detected in infants and even before birth, while in others they appear specifically during childhood, adolescence or adulthood.
