Detention for expulsion. EU law (Return Directive) and Spanish legislation (LOEX) allow the existence of CIES, detention centers whose sole purpose is to facilitate the expulsion of foreigners. Today June 15 is the Day Against CIEs. It is a day in which we remember that there are still detention centers for foreigners in our country, specifically seven: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Algeciras-Tarifa, Murcia, Tenerife and Las Palmas.
All persons, including migrants, have the right to freedom. Detention and subsequent admission to a detention center for foreigners (CIE), should be considered as an exceptional measure and once all alternative measures have been exhausted, after an individual assessment of each specific case.
