August 14 is Cereal Grower's Day in Argentina, a date that honors this activity and all the workers involved in each of the different stages it includes. Although its origin refers to a memorable banquet, which was attended by different organizations in this field, it commemorates the first tons of wheat exported in the country.
On April 12, 1878, the first shipment of 4,500 tons of wheat was made from the city of Casilda, Santa Fe. Carlos Casado del Alisal was a Spanish broker in charge of this mission.
Together with six sailing ships, he led this cargo across the Atlantic and managed to reach the port of Scotland. Upon arriving in this country, he had to face many difficulties, since there was no desire to comply with the payment that had been previously agreed upon. Thus, Casado negotiated the price with determination, with the threat of discarding the transported material at sea if he was not paid what was owed.
From this moment on, Argentina began to be considered as "the breadbasket of the world", a title that accompanied it for a good part of its history, with the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita in the world at that time.
