Organ donation consists of the removal of organs or tissues from the body of a recently deceased person or from a living donor, with the purpose of implanting them in a person from whom they have been removed. Internal organs that can be donated include kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas, intestines and lungs. Skin, bones, bone marrow and cornea are also transplantable tissues.
In Mexico there are more than 22 thousand people waiting for a transplant. However, if a person joins the donation program, he or she can save up to five lives and make a big difference.
The National Day of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation is celebrated in Mexico on September 26 every year, with the aim of raising awareness and reflecting on the value of donation.
