Different Churches began to celebrate this feast and put it on different dates of the year; Paul V, although he allowed it on September 27, 1608, thought it convenient not to impose its acceptance; Clement X ended with this variety regarding the new feast and on September 20, 1670 he fixed it on October 2, the first free day after St. Michael, to whose feast it is as subordinate.
It is of faith that in this exile, God entrusts to the Angels the custody of the men destined to contemplate Him in heaven, and this is assured by the Scriptures and unanimously affirmed by Tradition. The most certain conclusions of Catholic theology extend the benefit of this precious protection to all members of the human race, without distinction of righteous or sinners, of infidels or baptized.
To ward off dangers, to sustain man in his struggle against the devil, to awaken in him holy thoughts, to turn him away from evil and to punish him from time to time, to pray for him and to present to God his own prayers: this is the office of the Guardian Angel.
