20 July - Schwörwoche and Fischerstechen in Ulm
In the heart of Ulm, the penultimate Monday in July is a truly unique and decisive moment for many Ulm residents - Schwörmontag. This day, characterized by festive customs and historical rituals, marks not only an unofficial but also the city's most important public holiday.
Its roots go back to the 14th century, when the "Schwörbrief" put an end to the turbulent disputes between the guilds and the citizens. This historic document guaranteed both parties their rights and laid the foundation for supportive cooperation between the mayor and the estates. Even today, the solemn oath taken by the mayor in front of aldermen and all citizens is at the heart of Schwörmontag.
In the afternoon, a colorful spectacle unfolds on the Danube - the "Nabada". A colorful and imaginative boat parade moves through the waters and fascinates the spectators. Schwörmontag is the highlight of a whole week known as "Schwörwoche". Every four years, this week is crowned with the traditional "Fischerstechen", a rousing tournament on the Danube. The city comes alive with colorful parades and captivating fishermen's dances. In Ulm, Schwörwoche becomes a celebration of tradition, cohesion and living history, immersing the community in a harmonious frenzy of culture.
