18 July - Zwiesel Border Festival
The Zwiesel Grenzlandfest is one of the most traditional folk festivals in the region and is a highlight in the glass town's calendar of events. In the past, large folk festivals were only held in larger towns such as Straubing or Landshut, but the up-and-coming market town of Zwiesel hosted the region's first folk festival in 1880. The nine-day festival offers various events, including Youth Day, Community Day and Children's and Family Day. The crowning glory is a magnificent firework display on the second Sunday.
During the Zwiesel Borderland Festival, there are some special traditions and customs that make the festival a unique experience: The Grenzlandfest begins with a festive parade through the town. Clubs, bands and traditional costume groups present themselves in traditional dress. The official opening takes place afterwards with the tapping of the beer by the mayor.
Bavarian delicacies: There are numerous stalls on the festival grounds offering Bavarian specialties such as pretzels, veal sausage, pork knuckle and Obazda. A culinary delight for visitors!
Various music groups perform on the festival stages - from brass bands to folk music and modern bands. The dance floors are well filled and the celebrations are exuberant. There is a convivial atmosphere in the large marquee. Young and old meet here to celebrate with live music, beer and good humor.
