5 September - Grevenbroich-Stadtmitte Shooting Festival
The Schützenfest Grevenbroich-Stadtmitte is a traditional folk festival celebrated in the town of Grevenbroich in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The first shooting festivals were already celebrated in the Middle Ages. Back then, they served as a defensive exercise and to foster camaraderie among the marksmen. Over time, the shooting festivals developed into popular festivals celebrated by the entire population.
The shooting festival in Grevenbroich-Stadtmitte usually takes place at the end of August or beginning of September. The festival begins with the shooting in the Erckenspark Museum.
There is a concert in the inner courtyard of the Albert-Schweitzer-Haus. A serenade takes place on the market square.
An impressive torchlight procession through the town followed by a civic ball in the marquee. On the Thursday after the shooting festival, the “Higher Ascension” takes place, attended by all former shooting kings and queens.
