Translated literally, it means "Restoration of Light Day”, and celebrates the victory over Japan which liberated Korea from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule on August 15, 1945. Japan declared unconditional surrender and World War 2 was over, which made Korea restore its own power. ‘Gwangbok‘ means to regain the light, which perfectly describes the restoration of national independence that was taken away for 35 years under the Japanese invasion. August 15 also commemorates the formation of the very first South Korean government three years later under Syngman Rhee, on August 15, 1948. On Gwangbokjeol, you will get to see many buildings and streets with Korean national flags called “Taegeukgi”.
