On August 24, 1821, Iturbide, a Mexican military officer and statesman, and Don Juan de O'Donoy signed the Treaty of Cordoba, ending the Mexican people's war of independence, which recognized the independence of Mexico and adopted a moderate constitutional monarchy as the form of government of the new country. On September 27, 1821, the army of the Trigarante, under the command of Iturbide, entered the streets of Mexico City. The next day the Act of Independence was signed.
