St. Vincent and the Grenadines is very popular for being a weddings and honeymoon paradise and has won the Best Honeymoon Island of The Year presented by Caribbean Travel World Awards in 2007 and again in 2008.
Independence for Saint Vincent was achieved on Oct. 27, 1979. Shortly thereafter, the political entity became known officially as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The new government was formed as a constitutional monarchy and became a member of the Commonwealth.
Columbus was the first European to discover St Vincent and the Grenadines. He discovered the islands of SVG in 1498. He named the main island after the Spanish saint, St. Vincent of Saragossa. The thirty-two smaller islands he called “Grenadines,” the Spanish for pomegranate because their geography is reminiscent of the distribution of pomegranate seeds.
