Meanwhile, the military maritime flag of Russia has another look and history. Since 1701, the year it was established by Peter I the Great, it is called the flag of St. Andrew and commemorates one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ who was the first missionary in those lands and is highly regarded by Russians. The Day of the Apostle Andrew, as well as the flag with his name that symbolizes the Russian Navy and was reborn in the new history of the country also in the early 1990s, is celebrated on December 14.
