Japanese Immigration Day is celebrated on June 18 because it was the date on which the first ship docked in Brazil with Japanese immigrants, in the port of Santos, in São Paulo, in 1908.
Officially, the National Day of Japanese Immigration was instituted in Brazil through Law nº 11.142, of July 25, 2005.
Japanese immigration began at the beginning of the 20th century, as an agreement between the Japanese and Brazilian government, since Japan was experiencing a series of economic crisis. On the other hand, Brazil needed labor to grow coffee.
It is estimated that 2 million Japanese and their descendants live in the country and of these 1.3 million are in the state of São Paulo.
