Today we celebrate the day of the Journalist in Paraguay, this date commemorates the first publication of "El Paraguayo Independiente" on April 26, 1845. This was the first newspaper that the Republic of Paraguay knew and which served to affirm national sovereignty. It is a marked date in the calendar because also on this same date but in 2005, the Paraguayan writer and journalist Augusto Roa Bastos, considered one of the most important authors of Paraguay and prominent in Latin American literature, died.
In recognition of the importance of the press for the dissemination of ideas, former Paraguayan president Carlos Antonio López promoted the weekly newspaper 'El Paraguayo Independiente'. This medium also served to defend the independence of the country against the Argentine government, which insisted on denying it.
After seven years of weekly publications, with its 118th edition, on Saturday, September 18, 1852, 'El Paraguayo Independiente' was suspended due to the recognition of total independence by the Argentine Confederation.
