The Red Guara or Red Macaw was declared National Bird of Honduras on June 28, 1993 by the National Congress of Honduras (Executive Decree Nº 36-93). On the same day, the White-tailed Deer was named National Mammal of Honduras. As a measure to preserve the fauna and biological diversity of Honduras.
The Macaw has all the characteristics of a common parrot, with the singularity of having in its plumage very vivid colors such as yellow, red and blue; it has a very long and attractive tail; its diet consists of: nectar, roots, fruits, nuts and cereals; its natural habitat are very jungle areas and in territory generally inhabits the Mosquitia, the longevity of these birds is approximately 30 years, they do not make nests but they do occupy holes in very tall trees; they lay two to three eggs every 28 days and form couples very united for life.
White-tailed deer: they are of medium size, have long legs and a smooth back, their head is large and narrow. Dorsally it is brownish brown or orange brown, ventrally the chest and thighs are white, its forehead is dark brown, they have conspicuous white facial markings, the ears are a little long and narrow, it has curved and bifurcated antlers which are present only in males. The tail is brown above and on the edges and the ventral part is white, in juvenile age they are reddish brown with white spots and stripes. They live in dry forests, secondary cloud forests and savannahs; they feed by browsing on tender branches, leaves, fruits and plant species.
