The celebration of the Tree Festival in Catalonia was established in 1899 by the forestry engineer Rafael Puig i Valls, a forerunner of the defense of the natural environment and environmental education in our country. With this celebration, which was mirrored on Tree Day in Nebraska (USA), established in 1872, I wanted to spread the importance of trees as water cycle regulators, erosion protectors and landscape modulators.
The first tree festivals in Catalonia took place in the spring of 1899 organized by the Friends of the Tree Festival Society, which had been founded by Rafael Puig himself: on March 23 in Sant Joan de les Abadesses, with the participation of all the children of the town in school stage, and on April 30 in the Parc de la Ciutadella of Barcelona.
