La Almudena, patron saint of the city, apart from giving her name to many Madrilenian girls, to the largest cemetery in Madrid and to the ugliest cathedral in Spain, barely means anything to the people of Madrid, but a party in their work calendar, - writes Andrés Trapiello in his book "Madrid".
It is one of the two local holidays that the city council establishes in its work calendar (the other local holiday in the capital was May 15, San Isidro).
In this way, on November 9 the workers of the city of Madrid have a party. It is also enjoyed by workers from other municipalities but whose companies are governed by the working calendar of the capital.
There are other municipalities in the Community of Madrid where November 9 is a holiday in their work calendars. These are: San Fernando de Henares, Las Rozas and Valdeolmos-Alalpardo.
