Billiton Maatschappij was founded 29 September 1860, when its articles of association were approved by a meeting of shareholders in the Groot Keizershof hotel in The Hague, Netherlands. Two months later, the company acquired mineral rights to the Billiton (Belitung) and Bangka Islands in the Netherlands Indies archipelago off the eastern coast of Sumatra. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company was founded on 16 July 1885 in the mining town of Silverton, New South Wales. It was also a market leader in value-added flat steel products.
Today BHP is an Australian multinational mining, metals and petroleum public company that is headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is one of the world's largest diversified resources companies, with 80,000 (2021) employees working in more than 100 operations in 25 countries.
