Agronomy is one of the major areas of agricultural sciences that focuses on the development of exact, natural, social, and economic sciences. The professional who works in the area of Agronomic Engineering has a fundamental role in several stages of the agribusiness production chain. In general, the Agronomic Engineer has a direct relationship with the optimization and logistics that involve the production of food in the field. Given the importance of the professional, October 12th is celebrated as Agricultural Engineer's day. This date is celebrated in Brazil on this day, however, it is on September 13 that the World Day of the Agronomist is celebrated.
In 1875, the first school of agronomy was established in the state of Bahia. Today, this course is part of the Federal University of the Recôncavo da Bahia, in the city of Cruz das Almas. The second school originated in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, more specifically in the city of Pelotas, in 1883, and is today part of the Federal University of Pelotas. However, it was only in 1933 that the profession was recognized in Brazil, 58 years after the creation of the first school.
The day of the Agronomist Engineer in Brazil is celebrated on October 12th, since it was on this date, in 1933, through the decree of law 23.196, that the profession was regulated in the country. In this sense, as mentioned above, this is the day chosen by Brazilian professionals to commemorate the date.
Until the regulation of the profession in 1933, professionals were given the title of both Agronomist and Agronomic Engineer. However, in 1946, through Decree No. 9,585, it was established that the title would be Agronomist Engineer for all professionals in Agronomy.
