The cockade is a badge that accompanies the national symbols of Argentina.
In 1935 the National Council of Education instituted May 18 as the Day of the Cockade (Día de la Escarapela), one of their most representative patriotic emblems. It was created in 1812, at the request of Manuel Belgrano, during the First Triumvirate as a badge in the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata.
Its objective was to unify the colors of the army, to distinguish itself from the enemies and to promote national unity.
Argentine men and women use this insignia on the left side of the chest, on the dates related to its creation (February 18), during the whole May Week (from the 18th to the 25th), and also on national holidays, such as the Flag Day (June 20) and Independence Day (July 9).
