On this day in 1949 tens of thousands of people were deported from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to Siberia. Only from Latvia were deported 43 thousand people, or more than 2% of the pre-war population of Latvia. They were brought to Siberia: to the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Irkutsk, Omsk, Tomsk and Novosibirsk regions. Often the exiles were simply abandoned in the middle of the taiga, causing many to die.
