Benito Juárez was born in San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca, on March 21, 1806. He was Zapotec, like his parents: Marcelino Juárez and Brígida García, who died when he was three years old. At the age of thirteen he went to the city of Oaxaca, where he worked as a grana harvester until the bookbinder Antonio Salanueva protected him, allowing him to study. He was a lawyer, federal deputy, governor of Oaxaca, minister of the Supreme Court and president of the Mexican Republic, but above all he was a great fighter and social reformer. In the opinion of many, he is the leading figure of Mexican politics in the 20th century.
On July 18, 1872, at the age of 66, Benito Pablo Juárez García, better known as Don Benito Juárez, constitutional president of the United Mexican States, died in Mexico City. He became the symbol of the republican institutions and the rule of law.
